Book Club

Our friendly Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month in the Library at 3.30pm. We welcome anyone who enjoys reading and likes
talking about books. We don't do 'lit crit' but we discuss why we like/didn't like the book choice. We exchange tips on recent reads that we think others might enjoy, and then wander on to a wide range of subjects. You don't have to buy the books – we take turns to choose a book from a Cambridgeshire Libraries multi-copy list. If you are interested in joining us, send a request to Sally via info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk or give your contact details to a Library Volunteer.

Upcoming read:

Next month we'll meet on June 16th to discuss the contemporary 2024 romance novel 'You Are Here' by David Nicholls. All welcome, and no need to buy the book as we have enough loan copies for everyone.

To join us, speak to a Library volunteer, or drop a line to info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk.

This month the chosen book was The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett

Our group fell into two camps – those who had never read any Terry Pratchett and those who had enjoyed him in the 1980s/1990s. The newbies, without exception, found the book ‘impossible to read’, ‘not my sort of thing’, ‘didn’t do much for me’, ‘annoying’, ‘tiresome’, ‘couldn’t keep my mind on it’ – and only one had managed to finish it. Those of us who are Terry Pratchett fans were disappointed and felt that the book hadn’t aged well, although we’d enjoyed bits and laughed from time to time. We agreed that this was not by any means his best work – he was obviously trying out ideas, and themes and characters hadn’t been properly developed. Our thumbs up were prompted by fond memories and ‘not being able to give Terry Prachett a thumbs down’.
