Visits from Sutton Beavers – two colonies of them!

They visited on 2 different Mondays, 25 November and 9 December, during their normal meeting time. The first colony of Beavers visited on 25 November. It was a busy session, with 20 of them, plus their leaders and helpers. They were all well behaved and keen to take part in the various activities on offer. They really enjoyed the story, especially the dragon roaring part (quite loud!)

For almost all of them it was their first visit to our library. The theme for the evening was dragons, plus activities geared towards the requirements of their Book Lover badges. They designed book covers, made bookmarks, and discussed book care. To to fit in with the chosen dragon theme, they made 3D dragon models and coloured dinosaur pictures. They took part in and enjoyed all the activities on offer, and also had a chance to browse the shelves and see what we have to offer. Now all they have to do for their badge is to read 6 books, and we can help with that, too – we have plenty of books to choose from.

The second group visited on 9 December. There were fewer children, but they also joined in with all the activities, which were almost the same as before. However, they had a poem instead of a story, then a ‘Find the Dragon Book’ activity, which proved very popular. One of the Beavers found 19 dragon-related books! A look in one of our reptile books, which had a picture of a Komodo dragon, revealed how well informed they were on the subject of dragons.

Some of the Beavers in this colony had previously visited with the Squirrels, and some were library members. There was time at the end to issue a few books to those children with library cards, and to hand out a few joining forms to parents. It was good to welcome children from a neighbouring village. Everyone enjoyed the visits, Beavers, helps and volunteers.

Book Club

Our friendly Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month in the Library at 3.30pm. We welcome anyone who enjoys reading and likes
talking about books. We don't do 'lit crit' but we discuss why we like/didn't like the book choice. We exchange tips on recent reads that we think others might enjoy, and then wander on to a wide range of subjects. You don't have to buy the books – we take turns to choose a book from a Cambridgeshire Libraries multi-copy list. If you are interested in joining us, send a request to Sally via info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk or give your contact details to a Library Volunteer.

Upcoming read:

Our next book is Nicola Upson's 1930s Cambridge-set 'Nine Lessons' which is the 7th in her series of mysteries featuring real-life crime writer Josephine Tey (1896–1952). All are welcome, and we will provide a copy of the book.  We will be meeting in the library to discuss it on Tuesday 17th March at 3.30pm.

To join us, speak to a Library volunteer, or drop a line to info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk.
