WORLd book day - 5th march 2026

World Book Day was on Thursday 5 March this year.  The library celebrated this important day by sharing stories and activities with children from Robert Arkenstall School.  We were pleased to have visits from Saturn, Earth and Mercury classes – Years 3 & 4.

The theme for the day was ‘Journeys’.  All the children listened to a story and took part in various activities. These included colouring a picture for display in the library, doing a book quiz, drawing a sketch map and tackling an alphabet transport challenge.  During the afternoon every child chose a free book to take home.  These are donated books that we are unable to use, usually because they are duplicates or not on the library computer system.

It was an enjoyable if exhausting day for all concerned, but well worth it. It was great to see the very real interest the children have in books, and the extent of their general knowledge.  This included details of the Titanic, types of aircraft and the first person to fly across the Atlantic.  There was even a child that knew how to spell yacht!  They were all amazing.

It was also good to see some children coming to visit during the after-school session - 16 visitors including parents. Some of them joined the library, so hopefully we will see them again soon.

Book Club

Our friendly Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month in the Library at 3.30pm. We welcome anyone who enjoys reading and likes
talking about books. We don't do 'lit crit' but we discuss why we like/didn't like the book choice. We exchange tips on recent reads that we think others might enjoy, and then wander on to a wide range of subjects. You don't have to buy the books – we take turns to choose a book from a Cambridgeshire Libraries multi-copy list. If you are interested in joining us, send a request to Sally via info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk or give your contact details to a Library Volunteer.

Upcoming read:

Our next book is Nicola Upson's 1930s Cambridge-set 'Nine Lessons' which is the 7th in her series of mysteries featuring real-life crime writer Josephine Tey (1896–1952). All are welcome, and we will provide a copy of the book.  We will be meeting in the library to discuss it on Tuesday 17th March at 3.30pm.

To join us, speak to a Library volunteer, or drop a line to info@haddenhamlibrarycambs.co.uk.
